Who we are
About Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is an independent foundation that originated from Stichting Zonnige Jeugd, an organization that has been committed to equal opportunities for children in vulnerable situations since 1964. Due to the growing urgency surrounding children in refugee reception centers, Zonnige Jeugd felt the need to take a more active role. Hocus Pocus was born from that urgency.
Since early 2026, Hocus Pocus has been operating as an independent foundation with its own independent board.
Hocus Pocus makes possible what once seemed impossible. We do this by working entrepreneurially and building new opportunities in collaboration with partners from government, philanthropy and the private sector.
We focus on children and young people aged 0 to 23 – with or without parents – at four locations: Katwoude, Willinklaan and the MS Galaxy in Amsterdam, and Ter Apel. In total, approximately 1,000 children and young people live at these sites.

Aranka van der Pol
Directeur
Aranka combineert haar ervaring in de humanitaire sector met ondernemerschap en strategisch leiderschap. Zij werkte meerdere jaren in vluchtelingencontexten, onder meer op Lesbos, waar zij de sociale onderneming Lots of Lesvos oprichtte. Binnen Hocus Pocus is zij verantwoordelijk voor visie, strategie, partnerschappen en de overall coördinatie van het programma.
Robbert van den Nieuwenhof
Coördinator activiteiten & uitvoering
Robbert coördineert en begeleidt de activiteiten op de locaties en werkt wekelijks met kinderen en jongeren in de opvang. Hij heeft ruime ervaring in het werken met nieuwkomers en bracht als tutor en gastdocent educatieve en sociaal-emotionele begeleiding in het basis- en voortgezet onderwijs. Met zijn energie en optimisme vindt hij snel aansluiting, ook wanneer taal ontbreekt, en creëert hij momenten van spel, plezier en vrijheid voor jongeren.
Alexandra Gordon-Gibson
Community building & integratie
Alexandra versterkt community building en integratie via sport, gezamenlijke activiteiten en ontmoetingen. Met een humanitaire opvoeding en ervaring bij internationale NGO’s, waaronder Save the Children, én lokaal gewortelde grassroots-initiatieven, woonde en werkte zij in onder meer Jordanië, Laos en Tanzania, wat haar blik op gemeenschappen en sociale vraagstukken sterk heeft gevormd. Vanuit haar overtuiging dat duurzame verandering ontstaat door het versterken van eigen regie, zet zij zich in voor inclusieve en verbonden gemeenschappen.
Our Board
The team is supervised by a Supervisory Board, which ensures good governance, strategic direction, and a continued focus on achieving the greatest possible positive impact. The Supervisory Board consists of: Jurrien Stomphorst (Chair), Fleurien Sluis (Treasurer), Jasmijn Andringa (Secretary), and Arend-Jan van den Beld (Member). Members of the Supervisory Board do not receive any remuneration for their work.
The foundation’s objective is to promote the well-being, safety, and personal and social development of children and young people residing in refugee reception centres in the Netherlands, as well as children and young people in similarly vulnerable positions, in the broadest sense of the term.

ANBI Status
Hocus Pocus has been granted ANBI status (“Public Benefit Organisation”) by the Dutch Tax Authorities.
This means that we are officially recognized as an organisation serving the public interest. As a result, donations to Hocus Pocus may be tax-deductible under certain conditions.
The ANBI status underlines our social mission, transparency, and non-profit way of working.
